They are referred to in degrees north or south of the Equator (such as 42º N and 6º S). Lines of latitude are also called parallels, because individual latitudes are a set distance north or south of the Equator and do not cross other latitudes. Tell students that the lines running across the page are lines of latitude, and the lines running up and down the page are lines of longitude.
